A Christmas weekend in London

A two-day outline that balances one big booking with time to explore.

Day one: the West End, at your own pace

Start around Covent Garden, keeping the first part of the day flexible. Browse the Market Building, pause for lunch, and walk towards Leicester Square. Check the season’s announcements before counting on a specific market or light display.

Give the evening one anchor

Book a Somerset House skating session or a Christmas lights bus tour, then fit the rest around it. If you choose the bus, check the departure point before booking dinner. If you walk, keep the route short enough to enjoy stops rather than chase every illuminated street.

Day two: choose your big outing

Pick Winter Wonderland for rides and a lively fairground day, or Christmas at Kew for an evening trail. These are different experiences in different locations. Doing both can turn an enjoyable day into a sequence of connections and queues.

Keep a wet-weather alternative

If the forecast changes, use an indoor activity where availability allows. Hogwarts in the Snow needs advance entry and travel to Leavesden; it is not a quick central London stop. Alexandra Palace skating is another option, subject to the session calendar.

The booking order

Reserve your must-do event first, then work out travel and meals around it. Leave gaps, check the cancellation terms and keep your final evening close enough to your accommodation for a comfortable journey home.
